Well, I am being let out of the office – out of the country in fact –  and I am off on a trade mission representing ExtraMile in Austin, Texas at the South By Southwest Festival. And no, that doesn’t mean I am taking my tent and putting my wellies on.

If you have been reading our previous blog round ups, then you will know that we have been working with UK Trade and Investment and were placed on the high value opportunities creative task force, if not read more about it here.

The South By Southwest Festival is a yearly event in Austin, where businesses from the digital, music and film industries get together to network, talk ideas, listen to industry leading experts and, very importantly, do business.

So I thought I would let you into five facts about SXSW

  1. SXSW started as a music festival in 1987 with just 700 people attending it has since grown and now has approximately 47,000 attendees. You can learn more about the history here.
  2. The positive impact to the Austin economy during SXSW is a whopping $190.3 million
  3. Microblogging start-up Twitter became well know at SXSW and Foursquare was launched there
  4. 55% of those attending SXSW have an annual income over $100,000
  5. In the first few years of the festival they had panels like – “The web is Dead” and “So you want to make a CD Rom” – Things have progressed a little since then.

So I will keep a bit of a diary while I am out there, let you know what I was up to and hopefully what contacts I have made.
