Google is an unpredictable beast. Again, a major change is being rolled out as Google is officially testing mobile first indexing (but perhaps we should’ve predicted that as more than half of the searches happening today will take place on a mobile device).

What’s mobile first indexing?

A mobile first index means that content from your mobile site, if you have one, will be prioritised over desktop content in search engine results pages – even when the search has taken place on a desktop device.

So should you have a separate mobile site too? Not necessarily. According to Search Engine Land (my go-to bedtime reading), Google “recommends you go with a responsive approach – the content is the same on a page by-page basis from your desktop to your mobile site.”

If your site is responsive it will already respond to factors such as screen size, orientation of screen and platform. Sites built responsively will automatically flex to fit whatever screen they are being viewed on.

So if your site is designed responsively, don’t panic about the mobile first index

Significantly, desktop and mobile versions of responsive sites have the same content available to searchers which means that they are unlikely to be penalised by mobile first indexing. And user experience is likely to be pretty good too.

But if your site is not built responsively disconnect from the internet and give up hope. Or read this instead. And this.
